Denmark’s top diplomat admitted Wednesday that efforts to soften the Trump administration’s stance on Greenland have failed, following high-level talks in Washington aimed at easing tensions over the US president’s controversial remarks.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said discussions with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio did not shift Washington’s position on President Donald Trump’s repeated suggestions that the United States should take control of Greenland.
“We didn’t manage to change the American position,” Rasmussen told reporters. “It’s clear the president has this wish of conquering Greenland.”
❄️ “Absolutely Unnecessary,” Denmark Says
Rasmussen stressed that a US takeover of Greenland — an autonomous territory under Denmark — is “absolutely not necessary,” despite America’s long-standing military presence on the island.
He called Trump’s rhetoric deeply emotional for both Danes and Greenlanders, noting Denmark’s history as a loyal US ally whose troops fought alongside Americans in Afghanistan and Iraq.
“Any ideas that do not respect Denmark’s territorial integrity or the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination are totally unacceptable,” he said.
🛡️ Trump: Greenland Is ‘Vital’ for US Defense
Hours before the meeting, Trump doubled down on his stance, insisting NATO should support US control of Greenland, which he called “vital” to his proposed Golden Dome missile defense system.
On Truth Social, Trump warned:
“IF WE DON’T, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL — AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!”
The post included a graphic depicting Greenland caught between US, Russian, and Chinese symbols, though Denmark says no Chinese ships have been seen near Greenland in a decade.
⚔️ Denmark Boosts Military Presence
In response to rising tensions, Denmark announced it would immediately increase its military presence in Greenland, launching exercises and deploying aircraft, vessels, and troops. Sweden confirmed it would participate at Denmark’s request.
Officials say Copenhagen has already invested nearly $14 billion in Arctic security, rejecting Trump’s criticism that Danish efforts amount to “two dogsleds.”
🇬🇱 Greenland Stands Firm
Greenland’s leadership reiterated this week that the island prefers to remain part of Denmark — a statement Trump warned could be “a big problem.”
In Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, national flags appeared across homes, shops, and vehicles in a show of unity.
“We are standing together in times when we may feel vulnerable,” the Nuuk municipality wrote on Facebook.
🌍 Growing Strain on Transatlantic Relations
The Greenland dispute has shaken relations between the US and its European allies, many of whom have publicly backed Denmark. Despite closed-door talks, US officials have not ruled out military options, further alarming NATO partners.
Observers say Trump’s hardline approach has intensified since the US-backed January operation in Venezuela that removed President Nicolás Maduro, signaling a more aggressive stance toward what Trump considers America’s strategic backyard.
